About ELF, the Exeter Leukaemia Fund
ELF, the Exeter Leukaemia Fund, supports patients with blood cancer and other blood disorders who are treated at the Haematology Centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, along with the people closest to them. From diagnosis, through treatment and beyond, ELF is there to lighten the load, and every service is free.
ELF is Exeter Business Club’s nominated charity for 2026-27. Gary Moore joins us on Fridays on ELF’s behalf, so come and say hello over breakfast if you’d like to find out more or get your business involved.
ELF was started in Exeter by Dr Miles Joyner in 1980 and has been part of haematology care at the RD&E ever since. Over the years the charity has helped to fund and develop the Haematology Centre itself, including Yarty Ward, research projects, specialist equipment, nurses and support roles.
Today ELF helps patients and families from across the South West in practical and personal ways, all free of charge:
- Transport to and from hospital appointments
- Counselling for patients and their loved ones
- Somewhere to stay overnight for patients and families travelling in for treatment
- Practical help at home
- Financial guidance and legal advice
- Complementary therapies
- A welcome kiosk in Haematology reception, with a free drink and snack for patients waiting for treatment
ELF receives no public or statutory funding. Everything it does is paid for by donations, fundraising and its own charity shops, which is why support from local people and businesses matters so much.
How Exeter Business Club helps
ELF joins the club as a free member for the year, so it can come along on Fridays, talk to the room about its work and grow its own network. Our annual charity quiz in February raises money for ELF, and when ELF runs a campaign or fundraiser, members get behind it by taking part, spreading the word or lending a professional hand.
Ways you can support ELF
Hold your own fundraising event, donate unwanted goods to an ELF shop, volunteer in the shops, at events or in the office, or make a donation through the ELF website. If your business would like to help, have a chat with Gary at one of our Friday breakfasts or get in touch with the ELF team.
ELF is a registered charity, number 1154727.
